Dental Treatment During a Holiday in Albania: What Fits and What Does Not
A fortnight on the Albanian coast has enough spare days in it for real dental work, provided the days are booked before you land. The clinic is in Tirana, and Tirana is the hub the beaches hang off: Durrës is 40 minutes away by car, and the southern resorts are a drive rather than a second holiday. What decides whether treatment fits your holiday is not the distance, it is the biology. Some treatments need one appointment, some need a working week with a laboratory in the middle, and some need months of healing that no holiday can contain.
| Planning treatment around a holiday | |
|---|---|
| Where the clinic is | central Tirana; the address comes with your appointment confirmation |
| Opening hours | Monday to Saturday, 08:00 to 18:00 |
| From Durrës and the ferry port | 40 minutes by car |
| What to send before you travel | a panoramic X-ray, photographs, and your holiday dates |
| Cost of the assessment and the scan review | Free |
| Best time to send it | as early as you can, so the appointments are held for your dates |
Send your holiday dates with a photograph of the tooth or teeth concerned. You will get back a plan that says which days you would need in Tirana and which days stay yours.
What fits inside a two-week holiday
| Treatment | Days needed in Tirana | Fits a fortnight |
|---|---|---|
| Whitening | one appointment | yes, easily |
| Zirconia crown or crowns | 3–5 days | yes |
| E-max veneers | 3–5 days | yes, if booked in advance |
| Root canal with a crown | 2 days for the root canal, then the crown appointments | yes |
| Extraction, including a wisdom tooth | one appointment, plus a check | yes |
| Implant placement, first stage | 2–3 days | yes, but the crown comes on a later trip |
| Implant and its crown, complete | two visits 3–6 months apart | no |
| Full arch on four implants | 5–7 days, then 2–3 days after 4–6 months | no |
The pattern is simple. Anything that involves a laboratory needs working days, not weekend days. Anything that involves bone healing needs months. The treatments that fit a holiday best are the ones where the result is finished before you fly home: crowns, veneers, whitening, a root canal, an extraction. Our crown work and why the local laboratory makes 3–5 days realistic are described on the zirconia crowns page.
Book before you fly, not when you arrive
An assessment on day three of your holiday means the laboratory stage lands in your last week, and the last week is the one with the boat trip in it. Send your X-ray and photographs weeks in advance instead. You get the written plan, we hold the appointments, and you arrive already knowing which two or three mornings belong to the clinic.
This is the same remote planning process foreign patients use, and it is described step by step on your visit to Tirana. The difference in your case is that the trip is already paid for, so the treatment costs you the treatment and nothing else.
Send your dates and your X-ray on WhatsApp at +355 69 691 1118 and ask for the appointments to be held. You will be told the same day whether your dates work.
Which base makes sense
If your holiday is in Durrës, Golem or Shëngjin, the clinic is a straightforward day trip and you can do a crown appointment in the morning and be back on the beach by lunch. If you are staying in Sarandë or Ksamil, the sensible pattern is a night or two in Tirana at the start or the end of the holiday, with the appointments grouped, rather than two long drives. Distances, the approach from the coastal road and where to leave a hire car are on the clinic location page.
If you are arriving by air, the airport is 17 km from the centre, about 25 minutes. If you came on the overnight ferry from Bari to Durrës with the car, you are 40 minutes away when you drive off the ramp.
Sun, sea and a fresh surgical site
This is the part holiday patients most often forget to ask about. Whitening and veneers do not interfere with a beach holiday at all, beyond a couple of days of avoiding strongly coloured food and drink after whitening, which is explained on the teeth whitening page. Surgery is different: an extraction or an implant leaves a site that should not be swum in, baked in the sun for hours or followed by a long evening of alcohol.
So the order matters. Put surgery at the end of the holiday if the water is the point of the trip, or at the beginning if you want the healing check done before you leave the country.
What it costs while you are here
Whitening is €100–200, a zirconia crown €150–250, an E-max veneer €200–350, a root canal with its crown €200–350, a wisdom tooth €100–200, and an implant with its crown €450–650 across the two visits. For a UK visitor those figures sit against £400–800 for a single crown and £500–1,000 for a veneer at home, which is why a holiday appointment is often the cheapest dentistry of the year.
FAQ
Can I really have a crown made in a week on holiday?
Yes, for a normal case. Day one is the preparation, the digital impression and a temporary crown; the laboratory in Tirana then needs working days; and the fit and bite adjustment are a short appointment 3–5 days later. What breaks the schedule is a tooth that turns out to need a root canal first, which is why the X-ray review before you travel matters: it tells us whether your week needs to include that step.
What if something goes wrong when I am back home?
You send photographs and a description and it is reviewed here, usually within a day or two. Small adjustments can often be made by a dentist near you, working from the specification we send, and anything covered by the written guarantee is dealt with on your next visit or on a return trip: 5 years on crowns and veneers, 5 on implants. You leave with your records, so nobody has to guess what was used.
I have a toothache and I am on the coast right now. What do I do?
Send a message with a photograph and tell us where you are staying and how long you have. Pain that has kept you awake, swelling or a broken tooth is treated as urgent, and the earliest appointment we can offer is the one you will be offered, rather than a slot after the laboratory work of patients who planned ahead. If the honest answer is that you need treatment your remaining days cannot contain, we will say so and give you something that holds until you are home.
Is August a bad month to try to book?
August is the busiest month in the country, because it is peak season on the coast and it is when the Albanian diaspora comes home, so both the roads and the diary are fuller. It is not a bad month to be treated; it is a bad month to be spontaneous. Send your dates in spring for an August holiday and the appointments will be there. Late September and early October are quieter, warm, and the easiest weeks of the year to combine a beach and a laboratory.
Use the quote form, attach your X-ray and put your arrival and departure dates in the message. The dentist who will treat you plans the treatment around your holiday and you get the written plan, with the appointment days marked, within 24 hours.
