Teeth Whitening in Tirana: One Appointment, and What It Can and Cannot Do
Professional whitening lightens the natural tooth itself, from the inside of the enamel outwards, using a peroxide gel applied in the clinic under a protective barrier on the gums. It costs 100–200 euro and takes one appointment. It is the smallest treatment on our price list and the one most often misunderstood, because it has no effect at all on ceramic, on fillings or on a tooth that is dark from the inside.
- What it treats
- Natural enamel and dentine, discoloured by age, food, tea, coffee or tobacco

- A check that there is no untreated decay or exposed root surface
Send a photograph of your teeth in daylight without a flash. We will tell you honestly whether whitening is likely to change what is bothering you, or whether the colour is coming from something whitening cannot reach.
What it will not whiten
This is the part worth knowing before you spend anything.
- Crowns, veneers and bridges keep their manufactured colour. Ceramic does not respond to peroxide. If you already have ceramic on your front teeth and the rest has yellowed, whitening the natural teeth can actually improve the match, or ruin it, which is why the shade is compared first.
- Composite fillings do not change either. A white filling in a front tooth that matched before whitening will look darker afterwards and may need replacing.
- A tooth that is grey from a dead nerve is discoloured from the inside and does not lighten from the outside. That needs internal treatment or a crown.
- Staining from certain medicines taken in childhood sits deep in the tooth and responds poorly. Cases like these are usually a veneer conversation, and that is set out on porcelain veneers.
Sensitivity, and how it is handled
Some sensitivity to cold in the 24 to 48 hours after whitening is normal and expected, not a sign that something went wrong. It is stronger in people who already have receding gum margins or exposed root surfaces, which is one reason the appointment starts with an examination rather than the gel.
What reduces it: a desensitising gel applied at the end of the appointment, avoiding very hot and very cold drinks for a day, and not stacking whitening onto the same day as extensive drilling. If you have had sensitivity from a whitening product before, say so and the session is adjusted rather than repeated blindly.
For the first 48 hours the enamel takes up colour more easily than usual, so coffee, tea, red wine, curry and tobacco are worth avoiding. It is a short list for a short period, and it decides how much of the result you keep.

FAQ
Should I whiten before or after veneers?
Before, always, and this is not a detail. Ceramic is made to match the shade of the teeth around it at the moment it is made. If you whiten afterwards, the natural teeth move and the ceramic does not. Whitening the lower arch a few days before the upper veneers are designed is standard practice in a smile makeover and costs a fraction of covering those teeth.
How many shades will my teeth lighten?
Nobody can promise a number, and a clinic that quotes one is guessing. Yellowish teeth respond well; greyish teeth respond less. What you get is a measurement of your starting shade in daylight, a photograph, and the same measurement afterwards, so the change is documented rather than described.
Is whitening bad for the enamel?
Professionally applied peroxide at controlled concentration, on teeth that have been examined first, does not soften enamel in any way that persists. The risks that matter are chemical burns to the gum from a badly placed barrier, and using shop-bought kits on undiagnosed decay, where the gel reaches the nerve through a cavity.
Does it work on a single dark tooth?
Not usually, because the darkness is normally internal. A single dark tooth is examined first: if the nerve is dead, the options are internal whitening from inside the tooth or a crown, and the cost of each is quoted separately. Using an external gel on it simply lightens the other teeth and makes the difference more obvious.
Write to us through the contact form with a daylight photograph and tell us what you want the colour to match. The dentist who will treat you replies with whether whitening suits your case, what it will not change, and the appointment length, within 24 hours.
