Tooth extraction and wisdom teeth in Tirana

Wisdom tooth extraction cost at Medicus Molaris starts at 100–200 euro per tooth, and that figure covers the local anaesthetic, the removal itself and the aftercare instructions you leave with. An upper wisdom tooth that has come through straight takes minutes. A lower one lying sideways under the bone is a different operation with a different recovery, and the only way to know which of the two you have is to look at the X-ray first.

What it is
Removal of a tooth that cannot be repaired, or of a wisdom tooth that is impacted, decayed or pressing on the tooth in front
Time in the chair
10 to 20 minutes for a straightforward tooth, 30 to 45 for an impacted lower wisdom tooth
Visits
One appointment. Stitches and a wound check follow where the removal was surgical
Price from
100–200 euro per wisdom tooth
Anaesthetic
Local anaesthetic only. The jaw is numbed, you stay awake, and you can talk to the dentist throughout
Recovery
Swelling peaks on the second day and settles by the fourth or fifth
Planning
A panoramic X-ray for a simple case, a CBCT scan where a lower root sits near the nerve canal

Send your panoramic X-ray and say which side hurts. You will be told whether the tooth is a simple lift or a surgical removal, how long the jaw will be sore, and the price for that specific tooth rather than a range.

Simple removal and surgical removal are two different jobs

A tooth with a crown you can see and roots that run straight is loosened and lifted out whole. There is no cutting, the socket is left to fill in, and most people are eating soft food the same evening.

A surgical removal is needed when the tooth has broken off at gum level, when the roots are hooked, or when a wisdom tooth never came through and is sitting in the bone at an angle. The gum is lifted as a small flap, a little bone over the crown is removed, the tooth is often divided into two pieces so that each root comes out along its own path, and the gum is stitched back. It is a longer appointment and a longer recovery, and it is priced differently for the honest reason that it is more work.

The dividing line matters when you are travelling, because it decides how many days you should keep free. We tell you which side of it you are on before you book.

Impacted wisdom teeth: when they need to go and when they can stay

Not every wisdom tooth has to come out. A tooth that has erupted fully, bites against the one above it and can be cleaned is doing no harm. The reasons to remove one are concrete:

  • Repeated swelling around a tooth that is only half through, where food and bacteria collect under the gum flap and cannot be cleaned out.
  • Decay in the tooth in front. A wisdom tooth angled forwards traps plaque against the back surface of the second molar, and that surface is almost impossible to reach with a brush. Losing the second molar to save a wisdom tooth is a bad trade.
  • Pressure and resorption, where the impacted crown is grinding against the root of its neighbour.
  • A cyst forming around an unerupted crown, visible on the X-ray as a clear ring.

Where the lower roots sit close to the nerve canal that supplies the lip and chin, we take a CBCT scan rather than guess from a flat image, and we explain what the scan shows about the risk of temporary numbness before you agree to the appointment.

Keeping the socket ready for an implant

If the gap is going to be filled later with a single tooth implant, what happens in the ten minutes after the tooth comes out matters more than most people are told. An empty socket loses width as it heals, and a ridge that has collapsed inwards needs rebuilding before an implant can be placed in the right position. Packing the socket with graft material at the time of the extraction preserves most of that width and often removes the need for a separate graft operation later.

Item Price (EUR)
Wisdom tooth, erupted or surgical 100–200
Socket preservation graft at the time of removal 200–400
Consultation, X-ray reading and written plan Free
Root canal instead, where the tooth can be kept 200–350

If you would rather ask a question than fill in a form, write to us on WhatsApp at +355 69 691 1118. Send the X-ray as a photograph of the screen if that is all you have; it is usually enough to tell a simple tooth from a surgical one.

Your visit

Stage What happens
Before you travel X-ray or CBCT reviewed, the type of removal confirmed, the price and the days agreed
Appointment day Local anaesthetic, removal, graft if the gap is to be restored later, stitches where needed
The same evening Ice, soft cold food, no rinsing, no smoking. Painkillers as advised
Day 2 or 3 Wound checked and the bite looked at. Stitches reviewed
Back home Photographs by WhatsApp if anything worries you, and a note for your own dentist

Flying after an extraction

Cabin pressure does not pull a clot out of a socket, but a dry socket at thirty thousand feet with no dentist on board is a miserable way to spend three hours. The risk window for a clot breaking down is the first three days, so a same-day flight after a simple removal is usually fine and a same-day flight after a surgical lower wisdom tooth is not something we would advise. Where a removal is one part of a longer treatment plan, the calendar is built so the surgery sits at the start of your stay in Tirana and the review sits before your flight. The sequencing is explained on your visit to Tirana.

FAQ

Will I be awake?

Yes. Extractions here are done with local anaesthetic, which numbs the tooth, the socket and the surrounding gum. You feel pressure and hear movement, and you can raise a hand at any point and the dentist stops. Most patients are surprised at how quickly the appointment is over. For an impacted lower tooth, the numbness reaches the lip and tongue of that side and takes two to three hours to wear off, which is why we ask you not to drink anything hot on the way back to the hotel.

How much swelling should I expect?

For a simple removal, very little. For a surgical wisdom tooth, expect the cheek to be visibly swollen on the morning after and at its worst on the second day, with the jaw stiff enough that a wide yawn is uncomfortable. It improves noticeably from day three. Ice on the outside for the first day, then warmth from day three, keeping the head slightly raised at night, and taking the painkillers before the anaesthetic wears off rather than after all make a measurable difference.

Can all four wisdom teeth be taken out at once?

Two on the same side is a common and sensible pairing because it leaves you one side to chew on. All four in one sitting is possible for erupted teeth and rarely a good idea for impacted ones, since it doubles the swelling and leaves nothing comfortable to eat with. What suits your case is set out in the written plan, with the appointment split across your stay if that is the better route.

What if the tooth could be saved instead?

Then we will say so and price both. A broken tooth with enough structure left below the break is often better kept with root canal treatment and a crown than removed and replaced, and an extraction that is genuinely avoidable costs you a tooth you will pay to replace later. The written plan lists the teeth worth keeping first, and any tooth marked for removal carries a one-line reason next to it.

Use the contact form with the X-ray attached and the tooth marked. The dentist who will treat you reviews it and you receive the type of removal, the price and the recovery plan by e-mail within 24 hours.
