Sinus Lift for Upper Back Implants: Cost, Technique, Flying
A sinus lift raises the floor of the maxillary sinus and puts graft material underneath it, so an implant in an upper back tooth position has bone to sit in. It costs 500–800 euro here. Two versions of the operation share the name and they are not the same experience: one adds a few minutes to the implant appointment, the other is a separate surgery with months of healing before the implant. Which one your case needs is measured on the CBCT, in millimetres, before you book.
- The problem it solves
- Too little bone height between the ridge and the sinus floor
- Where
- Upper jaw, the molar and premolar positions
- Crestal technique
- Through the implant hole, 2–3 mm gained, implant placed the same day
- Lateral technique
- Through a small window in the side of the ridge, larger gain, implant later
- Anaesthesia
- Local anaesthesia
- Healing before the implant
- 4 to 6 months for a lateral lift
- Price
- 500–800 euro
- With an implant
- Implant from 300–450 euro, priced on its own line
Ask for the bone height at each planned site in millimetres. It is the single number that decides whether your upper implants need a lift, and you are entitled to see it before you commit to anything.
Why the upper back jaw runs out of height
The maxillary sinus is an air space above your upper back teeth. When an upper molar is lost, two things happen at once: the ridge below narrows, and the sinus expands downwards into the space the root used to occupy. After several years there can be 3 or 4 millimetres of bone where an implant needs 8 to 10.
This is why the upper back jaw is the most common site for augmentation, and why a quote written from a flat panoramic X-ray alone is guesswork there. A panoramic image flattens the sinus floor into a line; the CBCT shows its true shape, its thickness, and whether the membrane inside is healthy. The wider subject of ridge rebuilding sits on bone graft for dental implants.
Crestal or lateral: two operations, one name
** The implant channel is drilled to just below the sinus floor and the floor is lifted gently with the graft material pushed through that channel. It buys 2 to 3 millimetres and the implant goes in during the same appointment. From your side it feels like an implant placement, no more.
** A small window is made in the outer wall of the ridge, the sinus membrane is lifted under direct vision, and the space beneath it is filled with graft. It can restore much more height. It is a separate operation, it swells more, and the implant follows after 4 to 6 months.
The measurement decides. Roughly speaking, 6 millimetres or more of native height usually allows a crestal lift with the implant in the same visit; less than that points to a lateral lift and a second trip. Your plan states the height found, the technique chosen and the reason.
Flying after a sinus lift
This is the question travellers ask first, and it deserves a straight answer. Cabin pressure changes act on the sinus, and in the days after a lateral lift the graft and the membrane are settling. A crestal lift is a small event and does not normally change flight plans beyond the usual two or three days we ask you to stay. A lateral lift is treated more carefully, and your aftercare sheet gives a specific number of days rather than a guess.
Either way the aftercare is the same shape: do not blow your nose, sneeze with your mouth open, no straws, no smoking, and take the medication listed in your plan. These instructions are given in writing in your own language, not explained once at the door.

Send your CBCT if you have one, or ask for the scan to be taken on day one in Tirana at free. The plan is rewritten with the real numbers before any surgery is booked. WhatsApp +355 69 691 1118 for anything urgent.
Your visit
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Before travel | Height measured on the CBCT, technique and price fixed in the plan |
| Surgery day | Crestal lift with the implant, or lateral lift on its own, under local anaesthesia |
| Next 2–3 days | Swelling and sinus checks, written aftercare, flight cleared |
| 4–6 months | Graft matures, then the implant if it was not placed with the lift |
FAQ
Is a sinus lift dangerous?
It is a routine augmentation with a well-documented complication profile, and the most common complication is a small tear in the sinus membrane, which is repaired during the same procedure. The reason we insist on a CBCT is that the scan shows membrane thickness and any existing sinus condition beforehand. If your sinus is not healthy at the time, the lift is postponed rather than pushed through.
Will I feel it in my nose?
You may feel congestion on that side for a few days after a lateral lift, and a little blood in the nose is common and not a warning sign on its own. It settles within a week. Sharp pain, ongoing bleeding or fever are different, and the aftercare sheet tells you what to do and gives you the WhatsApp number to send a photograph.
Can implants be placed without a lift if my bone is thin?
Sometimes. Shorter implants, tilted placement, or moving the implant forward to where bone is thicker can avoid a lift altogether, and a full-arch design does exactly that. Whether it applies to you depends on the scan and on how many teeth you are replacing. General suitability for implant treatment is set out on am I a candidate for dental implants.
How long does the whole thing take from start to crown?
Count 4 to 6 months from a lateral lift to the implant, then another 3 to 6 months for the implant to integrate, then the crown. With a crestal lift and an implant on the same day, you are looking at one healing period rather than two. The full implant process and its timings are on dental implants.
Use the quote form and say which upper teeth are missing and for how long. You receive a written plan naming the technique, the healing time, the flight advice and one exact price, reviewed by the dentist who will treat you within 24 hours.
