The Hidden Costs of Dental Packages Abroad, Line by Line

Dental treatment abroad hidden costs are rarely hidden in a sinister sense. They are simply outside the quote, because the quote was written to be attractive rather than to be complete. Turkey is the largest market for dental packages and therefore the most common source of these quotes, but the pattern is the same wherever a headline price is used to open a conversation: a short list of included items, a long list of things that are billed when they happen. Here are the twelve lines that turn up after the headline, and what this clinic does with each one.

The line Why it appears later How our written plan handles it
Extractions teeth to be removed are counted on the day, not on the X-ray every tooth to be extracted is named and priced on the plan before you travel
Bone graft only visible once a CBCT is taken, often taken after arrival CBCT is reviewed before you book; a graft is a plan line at €200–400
Sinus lift same reason, upper back teeth especially planned in advance at €500–800, with the healing time in the calendar
Abutments the connector between implant and crown is a separate product included in the implant and crown figure of €450–650
Temporary teeth quoted as an optional extra during healing included where the plan calls for temporaries
The final bridge or crowns the first visit ends with a provisional the definitive work and its material are in the quoted total
The second trip a one-trip quote reads cheaper both visits are dated and costed when the plan is agreed
X-rays and scans billed as imaging on arrival CBCT and planning are inside the treatment price
Medication antibiotics and painkillers after surgery prescribed and explained; pharmacy cost is yours and is told to you in advance
Transfers and hotel outside a clinic’s control, inside a package’s marketing we quote treatment only, and tell you the nights you need so you can book what suits you
Revisions and adjustments a bite adjustment becomes a new appointment adjustments during your visit are part of the treatment
The guarantee’s conditions a warranty exists but requires checks you cannot attend conditions are printed on the document: 5 years on the fixture, 5 on prosthetics

Send us the quote you already have, together with your X-ray, and you will receive the same treatment rewritten as a line-by-line plan so you can see which of these twelve lines were missing.

Where the headline price comes from

A package number is built from the cheapest defensible version of each component: the entry-level implant system, an acrylic temporary, the assumption that no tooth needs a graft, and one trip. If your mouth matches those assumptions, the headline is real. Mouths that need nothing unexpected do exist, and for them a package is good value.

The problem is that the assumptions are not stated. Nobody writes “this price assumes you need no bone”, so a patient who does need bone experiences a price rise rather than a clarification. Our answer is to state the assumptions as plan lines with their own prices, which is what the page on how your quote works describes in detail.

The second trip is the biggest single omission

Of the twelve lines above, the second visit moves a total more than any other, because it is not one charge but a cluster: flights, nights, days away from work, transfers, and the clinical work itself. A conventional implant needs two visits of 2–3 days, 3–6 months apart. A full arch needs 5–7 days, then 2–3 days after 4–6 months.

A quote that shows a single trip has either put a provisional result at the end of it or moved the definitive stage into an invoice you have not seen. Ask for the second visit in writing, with its days and its price, and half of the ambiguity in any comparison disappears at once.

Ask us on WhatsApp at +355 69 691 1118 for the one thing most quotes leave out: how many days, on how many trips, your case actually needs.

How to make two foreign quotes comparable

Put both on one page with the same rows. Implant system by name. Abutment, included or not. Crown or bridge material, by name. Extractions, counted. Graft and sinus lift, stated as needed or not needed and priced either way. Temporaries. Number of trips and nights. Flights for those trips. Guarantee years and conditions. Who performs the surgery, and whether the same person fits the final work.

Any row a clinic will not fill in is a row you should price at its worst plausible value. When both columns are complete, the cheaper one is genuinely cheaper, and quite often it is not the one with the lower headline. Our own published figures, treatment by treatment, are on the dental prices page, and the country-level comparison for implants is on the Tirana and Istanbul page.

What we charge before the plan exists

Nothing for the assessment. The first consultation and the CBCT review are free, and the written plan is issued before any money changes hands.

FAQ

Why is the final invoice higher than the package price I was quoted?

Because the package price answered a simpler question than your mouth asks. Extractions counted on the day, a graft found on a scan taken after arrival, an abutment priced separately, and a definitive bridge treated as a second stage will each add a line. None of that is necessarily dishonest, but it is avoidable: a plan written from your CBCT before you travel can only change if something genuinely unforeseeable appears, and then it changes by a named amount that was discussed with you first.

Which line is most often missing from a dental quote abroad?

The definitive prosthetics, closely followed by the second trip. Both are easy to omit because both happen after the enthusiasm of the first visit. Bone grafting comes third, and it is the one that most often doubles a single-implant budget, because it also adds months to the timetable. Ask specifically, in writing, whether the final crowns or bridge and the return visit are inside the figure you have been given.

Should I pay a deposit to hold a surgery date?

Holding a theatre date is a normal commercial request once a written plan exists and you have agreed to it. Paying anything before you have a plan that names your teeth, your materials and your dates is not normal, and it removes your only leverage if the plan that eventually arrives is different from the conversation. Read the cancellation and refund terms before you transfer money, and keep the correspondence.

Do travel and hotel belong in the comparison?

Yes, because they scale with the number of trips, and the number of trips is a clinical decision rather than a travel preference. Tirana is about 3 hours from London, 3h15 from Manchester and 3h30 from Dublin, and the airport is 25 minutes from the centre. Two trips means two of everything. Count them in both columns and the comparison stops flattering whichever clinic quoted the fewest visits.

Use the quote form to send your X-ray and your existing quote. The dentist who will treat you reads both and replies within 24 hours with a plan in which every one of these twelve lines is either priced or marked as not needed.
